The mining footpath "Muttental" located in the Mutten Valley near Witten is a 9 km scenic circular trial south of the Ruhr. Along the path are testimonies for centuries  of Ruhr coal mining located: galleries, mine shafts, winding tower. Every relic is explained on an elaborately designed board.

Rock piles in the Ruhr area
 
Rock piles are the visible heritage of mining above ground. They were created by embankment of overburden, slag, debris and construction rubble.

Their reconstruction made room for new use with leisure and recreational value.

There are more than 20 walkable rock piles in the Ruhr area.
